Definition:
Digital cleverness

The distinction between those who are truly digitally wise and those who are merely digitally clever is important. People who are digitally clever may be very good at manipulating digital technology, but they do so in a way that does not exhibit wisdom and does not help them become wiser. The digitally clever include some who use digital technology fluently in their daily lives and work: the programmers who invent new digital tools without seeing the wider implications of their work, for example, and the hackers and spammers who use digital technology destructively. There is no wisdom, digital or otherwise, in merely creating programs or in being a digital criminal—only digital cleverness. Digital wisdom comes only when digital tools are used to enhance thinking in a positive way.
