In 1999, she was elected as a Brookdale National Fellow to study the similarities and differences between aging and dying well. Dr. Ardelt’s research focuses on successful human development across the life course with particular emphasis on the relations between wisdom, spirituality, aging well, and dying well. Dr. Ardelt has been published in several professional journals, such as Journals of Gerontology, Social Psychology Quarterly, Social Forces, Research on Aging, Journal of Aging Studies, and Journal of Religious Gerontology. (From the University of Florida website at http://web.soc.ufl.edu/faculty/ardelt.htm.)

Ardelt considers wisdom to be a "combination of personality qualities" that "cannot exist independently of individuals."
She contends that "wisdom is in fact a property of individuals," and has proposed a model of wisdom as a three-dimensional personality characteristic, the three dimensions being Cognitive, Reflective, and Affective.
